Ledges, Grass, and Topwater Hits Bringing Out the Brutes
Pickwick Landing State Park - Hardin, TN
The big bass bite is on at Pickwick Lake, and July is shaping up to be one of the best times to target trophy-size fish. Anglers are dialing into deeper summer patterns, with the biggest Largemouth Bass coming from offshore ledges, humps, and shell beds in 10–20 feet of water. Crankbaits, football jigs, and Carolina rigs are the top producers during mid-morning and midday hours.
Early mornings are prime time for explosive topwater action, especially near grass lines, docks, and shaded coves. Walking baits and buzzbaits are triggering aggressive strikes from bass feeding in low-light conditions. Smallmouth Bass are also active near the dam and rocky points, responding well to swimbaits and drop shot rigs fished in moving current.
As temperatures climb, targeting deeper structure and using electronics to locate schools is key to staying on the fish. The bite may slow during the heat of the day, but the quality of the catch has remained strong. With the right approach, anglers are finding bass in the 5- to 8-pound range, with a few double-digit giants making appearances.
If you're hunting big bass, now’s the time to fish Pickwick Lake. The summer pattern is locked in, and the lake is rewarding those who put in the time with serious hookups.
